1 Donna Cave tour

This cave is renowned for its 'false floors'. It also features beautiful columns, calcite crystals and a cave decoration in the form of the Madonna. Electrical lighting is provided in this cave.

Challenges:

Many steep ramps and stairs-about 440 steps in total including 33 very steep ladder-type steps. A low section within the cave that requires walking crouched for about 12m.

Start time and place:

9.00am Meet at Donna Cave entrance. Park at Donna Cave car park, 1.8km from Chillagoe. Allow 10 minutes to walk to the cave entrance, and additional time to read the sign, or rest after climbing the 52 steps to the shelter.

830m return (from Donna Cave car park).

2 Trezkinn Cave tour

A boardwalk leads to a shelter shed at the entrance to the cave, where you can enjoy outstanding views of the Chillagoe landscape. Within the cave, a steel catwalk encircles a huge central mass of limestone. The sight of a magnificent 'chandelier' formation rewards visitors. Electrical lighting is provided in this cave.

11.00am Meet at Trezkinn Cave entrance. Park at Donna Cave car park, 1.8km from Chillagoe. Allow 15 minutes to walk to the cave entrance, and additional time to rest after climbing the 136 steps to the shelter.

835m return (from Donna Cave car park).

3 Royal Arch Cave tour

The cave tour takes you through passages and 11 chambers in one of the largest cave systems in the area. Unexpected shafts of daylight, fig trees, glimpses of darting bats, naturally sculptured limestone formations and ancient marine fossils are highlights of this tour. Hand-held lamps are provided for visitors aged over five years, to add to the excitement of exploring the labyrinth of tunnels and lofty caverns.

Challenges:

Many steep ramps and stairs-about 385 steps in total. Many low overhangs requiring visitors to walk crouched for several metres at a time.

Start time and place:

1.30pm Meet at the shelter shed at the Royal Arch car park. Park at Royal Arch car park, about 6km from Chillagoe. Allow 15 minutes to drive from Chillagoe to the car park: poor visibility due to the dusty road causes most visitors to take this drive slowly. A short 250m walking track leads you from the carpark to the cave.

1.3km return (from the shelter shed).
